How to trace the origin of an online harassment pile-on

Updated October 2026

To trace where a pile-on started, find the earliest post, then the bigger account that spread it.

It's usually not the very first post. It's an account with a big audience that quoted or linked you right before the posts took off. Dogpiling and brigading are traced the same way.

  1. Find what people are responding to

    • Usually one post of yours. Check which of your posts suddenly has hundreds of replies or quotes.
    • Sometimes a screenshot or a clip. If people are responding to something you can't find, someone may be passing around a screenshot. See how to find where an image or post went viral.
  2. Go back to the earliest post you can find

    • On X: search @yourname since:2026-10-01 until:2026-10-05, pick Latest, and move the dates back until it goes quiet.
    • On Bluesky: search mentions:yourname since:2026-10-01 the same way.
    • Call it "the earliest post I could find", not "the first". Deleted posts and private accounts don't show up.
  3. Find the hour it jumped, and who posted just before

    • Look for the jump: 3 replies an hour, then 60.
    • Just before the jump, there is usually one bigger account that quoted you, linked you, or posted a screenshot.
    • That account spread it. Most of the people replying saw it through them.
  4. Check whether it started on another site

    • If the first posts link somewhere, follow the link. Reddit threads, forums and group chats often come first.
    • Search your handle on Google in quotes: "yourname" site:reddit.com.
    • Private group chats and Discords you can't see. Nobody can, unless someone shares a screenshot.
  5. Save it before it's deleted

    • Screenshot each important post with the link, date and time showing. Copy the link too.
    • Note the account's handle. People change display names more often than handles.
    • Useful if you report a post or talk to a lawyer. The free and paid ways to do it: online harassment documentation tools.
Since June 2024

X hides who liked a post from everyone except the person who liked it. So nobody can show you the likers on X, by hand or with a tool. Bluesky likes are still public.

What a pile-on trace can't see

A trace stops where public posts stop: private accounts, group chats and deleted posts stay out of view.

Tools to trace a pile-on

X and Bluesky search are enough to trace it by hand; Pressfront Trace does steps 2 to 4 for you when there are too many posts to read.

Trace it freePaste your @username. Most traces take a few minutes. No account, no card.

Questions

Is the first post the one that started a pile-on?

Usually not. Most pile-ons take off when an account with a bigger audience quotes, links or screenshots the post. The earliest post shows where it began; the bigger account shows how most people saw it.

Can you trace a pile-on if the posts were deleted?

Only if someone saved a copy. Check the Wayback Machine and screenshots other people posted. Without a copy, the trace starts at the earliest post that is still public.

Are dogpiling and brigading traced the same way?

Yes. Dogpiling and brigading are other words for many accounts posting at one person. The steps are the same: the earliest post, the account that spread it, and whether it started on another site such as Reddit or a forum.

Can you see who liked the posts on X?

No. Since June 2024 X shows likes only to the person who liked the post, so no person or tool can list the likers. Bluesky likes are still public.
